One of the things people will learn when on a sales training course in Cheshire is the importance of networking, as making valuable contacts is essential for future business.

However, the way to network effectively is not just about meeting as many people as possible, but building relationships with those you meet.

This is according to Vanessa Vallely, foundnetwork creatively and build relationships er of We Are The City, a networking solution for professional women.

Speaking with the Chartered Management Institute, she said: “Meeting people is about quality and not quantity.”

Therefore, she suggested not to “spray” business cards everywhere, but make time to stay in touch with those you have made contact with.

“If you pledge to follow up and do something or send something to someone, always do it within 24 hours,” Ms Vallely recommended.

Another top tip is not to immediately go to the person that you recognise or who is in a similar position to you, as this is merely the “safe option”.

Although sales staff might feel as though they are not making as many contacts as they could be, they will be building stronger relationships. Therefore, they are more likely to do business with those connections in the future and also be recommended to other contacts through their new acquaintances.

According to Net Composites, networking events are very important, as they give businesses the opportunities to “build teams, leverage intelligence and align partners to create a global network”.
